Better Fitness is a key access gym on Princes Street. Sign up, collect your key, and the room is yours at four in the morning or eleven at night. Weight loss, strength and fitness, and beginners are always welcome.

$18 a week, per person $936 for a full year, by direct debit.

01What it costs

The price is on the page, because that is what you came to find.

Every other gym around here makes you ring up or fill in a form before they will tell you a number. Here it is, here is what it adds up to over a year, and here is what happens if you decide to stop.

  • You see the real number before you commit

$18 a week is $936 for a full year. Better you do that sum now than discover it in month three.

  • You pay it weekly, not in a lump

The $18 comes out by direct debit each week through Debit Success. There is no year up front to find, and no invoice for $936 lands on you.

  • Stopping is a conversation, not a fight

If you want to finish up, text, email or come and see us. We will not make it hard. Just tell us rather than stopping the payment, because that creates a mess at our end.

02Twenty four hours

Open at 4am. Open at midnight. Open on the Sunday of a long weekend.

This is a key access gym. Once you are signed up the building is yours whenever you want it, for as long as you want to be in there. If you work rotating shifts, or the only free hour you get is before the kids are up, that is the entire point of the place.

  1. Sign up, online or at the desk

Five minutes on the direct debit form. If online forms are not your thing, come in during office hours and we will do it with you.

  2. Collect your key

Once you are registered you pick up your key from us. That key is what gets you in at any hour of any day.

  3. Come in whenever, stay as long as you like

In their own words: perfect for our early birds, night owls and everyone in between.

03What is in there

A full floor of gear, and usually nobody in your way.

Every photograph on this page was taken inside the gym on Princes Street. The thirty two pieces of kit underneath were read off those photographs one by one and drawn, so you can see exactly what is here before you walk in. No other gym in the district publishes any of this.

Point at anything in the list, or tap it, and this draws it for you.

Nothing here is on a brochure

Every line in this list was read off one of the eight photographs the gym took of its own floor. If it is not in a picture, it is not on the list.

Every piece here was read off one of the gym's own photographs and drawn from it. Nothing came out of a catalogue. Click a line to lock it, then move your mouse freely. Click it again to let go.

Bring your own playlist

Do not want to listen to whatever is on? Connect your phone to our speaker and train to your own music.

There is a kids' area

Short on a babysitter? Bring them along. There is a corner set up where you can keep an eye on them yourself.

Internet TV on the wall

Follow a workout you already use on YouTube, or put something on for the kids while they wait.

Quiet most of the day

Their own words: no waiting in line for machines or weights, so you can take your time and focus on your form.

04Never set foot in a gym

You will not be the only one starting from scratch.

What stops most people is not the money. It is walking in the first time, not knowing how a machine works, and feeling like everybody else already knows what they are doing.

This is a small town gym and it is quiet for most of the day. Nobody is queuing behind you. Nobody is watching. Take as long as you need on a machine, and if you are not sure how something works, text us and ask, or catch us during office hours and we will show you.

Better Fitness is a gym where you can move at your own pace, no crowds, no pressure. Better Fitness Putāruru, in their own words

If you are over 60

Senior citizens pay $30 a month. Strength work does not mean throwing barbells about, and it is one of the few things that holds on to balance and independence as you get older. Come in during office hours and we will walk you round the machines.

If you have kids at home

Bring your child with you. There is a kids' area where you can keep an eye on them while you train, and the TV is there if they need something on.

If you work shifts

Your key works at 4am and it works at 11pm. You never have to plan your training around somebody else's opening hours.

05Common questions

The things people actually ask before they join.

If yours is not one of these, text or call 022 343 1636. That number reaches us whether or not the office is open.

What does it cost, really?

$18 a week per person, by direct debit. That is $936 over a full year. It comes out weekly, so there is nothing to find up front.

If you would rather pay up front, three months is $165. Senior citizens pay $30 a month.

Is it really open 24 hours?

Yes. When you sign up you get a key, and that key lets you in whenever you want, for however long you want. There is not always somebody on site, which is exactly why every member gets a key.

When is somebody actually there?

Office hours are Monday to Saturday, 11am to 1pm. Those hours can vary. If the door is closed and you need us, call or text 022 343 1636 any time and we will sort you out.

I am a busy parent and I cannot leave my kids at home.

Bring them. There is a kids' area where you can keep an eye on them yourself while you train, and an internet TV if they need something on.

How do I sign up?

Easiest way is the online form on this page. It takes about five minutes, and once you are registered you collect your key from us.

If online forms are not your thing, come in during office hours and we will sign you up there and then and give you your key.

How do I cancel if I need to stop?

Text, email or come in and see us. We will not be difficult about it. What we ask is that you tell us rather than just stopping the payment, because that creates a problem at our end and it is not fair on the other members.

Can I have a look before I commit?

Of course. Come in between 11am and 1pm Monday to Saturday, or call 022 343 1636 and we will arrange a time that works for you.
